How to Choose a Cabinet Maker in New Jersey: 7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring

Don't hire the first contractor you find on Google. Here are the questions every homeowner should ask before committing to a custom woodworking project.

Custom cabinetry is a significant investment — and picking the wrong cabinet maker can turn your dream project into an expensive mistake. Here are seven questions to ask before signing anything.

1. Can I See Examples of Similar Work?

Photos on a website are a good start. But ask to see projects similar to yours in scale and style. If you're doing a modern white oak kitchen, ask if they've built one before. Any experienced cabinet maker should have a portfolio.

2. What Are Your Boxes Made From?

This is the most important quality question. Boxes (the cabinet carcase) should be 3/4-inch plywood — not particleboard or MDF. Plywood is dimensionally stable, holds screws better, and handles moisture in kitchens and bathrooms without warping or failing.

3. Do You Use a Shop or Source from a Factory?

Some "cabinet makers" are actually installers who order boxes from a factory. Custom shops fabricate everything in-house, giving you more control over materials, joinery, and quality.

4. Are You Licensed and Insured in NJ?

Every contractor working in your home should carry general liability insurance at minimum. Ask for a certificate of insurance before work begins.

5. What Does the Quote Include?

Get everything in writing: materials, hardware, installation, finishing, and any site prep. An unusually low quote often means something isn't included — and you'll pay for it later as a change order.

6. What's Your Timeline?

A good cabinet maker typically has a 4-8 week backlog. If someone can start immediately, ask why. It's not always a red flag, but it's worth understanding.

7. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

Ask about their warranty and how they handle callbacks. Experienced shops stand behind their work. You want a builder who will show up if a hinge fails or a finish gets damaged in the first year.
